12:30 - Navigating Today's Music Companies & Artist Choice
In the past, the recorded music industry had neatly defined functional silos - labels, publishers, PROs, distributors, artist management - while artists signed traditional deals with labels and publishers. Now, we are seeing fundamental shifts in industry roles, who does what for whom, and evolving power structures. Publishers are buying master recordings, rightsholders are investing in distribution and technology, management companies are acquiring labels and publishers, and artists are retaining their IP rights. Why is this happening and what are the implications for the industry and for artists? Join a panel of experts, including Downtown Music Holdings' Andrew Sparkler, to understand the blurring lines of today's industry, how to get the most out of your intellectual property, and to choose your partners wisely.

12:30 - Is a War Between Labels and Publishers Coming?
Record companies currently pocket four to five times more streaming income than publishers do, thanks to a number of factors including government regulations. The Department of Justice is looking at terminating or scaling back those regulations. While some in the music eco-system -- especially songwriters -- are hoping for change, others want to keep things the way they are. We'll look at why things are the way they are and whether they should change. Takeaways will include a fuller understanding of how streaming income is divided between publishers and labels, and why, as well as predictions about how the status quo may change and which creative communities -- songwriters, artists, producers and others -- will be impacted for good or ill. Join Downtown Music Holdings' Joe Conyers III along with three other panelists for the discussion.
