Estonian author's society Eesti Autorite hing (EA) represents about 4000 Estonian composers, lyricists, arrangers and music publishers. EAU collects and distributes royalties to music authors and publishers for public performances. The administration of reproduction rights of musical works and licensing of rights in musical works for online use in Estonia is managed by EA in cooperation with NCB and NMP. EA also represents more than 200 Estonian authors of visual arts for whom it collects and distributes royalties for reproduction, communication to the public by TV, retransmission by cable network and droit de suite. Moreover, in cooperation with the Estonian Association of Audiovisual Authors, EA has the right to represent audiovisual authors in Estonia.
Music Publishing is the business of protecting and promoting song copyrights and collecting the royalties that these copyrights generate. Think of a song as intellectual property (it's an original piece of art!), and music publishing as the business that makes sure that songwriters get paid a fair compensation when their intellectual property is used by companies. Those companies could be record labels (mechanical royalties), radio stations, bars, and restaurants (performance royalties), or film studios and advertising agencies (sync license fees), and many more.
