About Eurosonic Noorderslag

Music moves, challenges and breaks boundaries. Not only country and city limits but also boundaries between people. Music has the ability to connect us. Non-profit organisation ESNS has been founded in order to stimulate and push the circulation of European music across the European continent as well as beyond. In order to obtain this goal, ESNS organises a festival and conference in Groningen, the Netherlands, over four days.

13:30 - Where’s My Damn Money? How Songwriters Get Paid Their Digital Dollars
Streaming now accounts for more than half of recorded music revenues worldwide, but many songwriters report that they are yet to see the benefit. However, it can be hard to track streaming royalties as they flow from the services through collecting societies and music publishers to each songwriter’s bank account. Based on the Song Royalties Guide he wrote for MMF UK, CMU’s Chris Cooke explains how songwriters get paid by the streaming services around the world. He’ll then talk to a panel of experts about how societies and publishers are seeking to reduce the complexities and delays, and how songwriters can ensure they are getting everything they are due. The panelists include: Mandy Aubry (Songtrust), Michiel Laan (Buma/Stemra), and Niclas Molinder (Session).

16:30 - Paying Songwriters Within 24 Hours Rather Than 2 Years
Can we really pay songwriters much faster than is currently the case? A recent industry pilot by Teosto, BMAT & Revelator showed that it is possible for songwriters to be paid quicker using technology that is available today. The result of the pilot was that they were able to show royalty payments can be paid within 24 hours to 19 different rights-holders. But how does that happen? Is it mainly about the use of electronic wallets? Some of the leaders in this field discuss how the industry can work together to ensure that songwriters can get paid faster, thereby removing one of the most stressful aspects of being an active artist. The moderator, Chris Carey (Media Insight Consulting), will be joined by panelists Mandy Aubry (Songtrust), Sammy Andrews (Deviate Digital), and Turo Pekari (Teosto).
